For pipe penetrations, building regulations require that pipes may only pass through fire-resistant walls and floors if the spread of fire is prevented for a specified period of time.
Firestopping systems are used to maintain the required fire resistance of room-enclosing components or to exceed it where necessary. They must be made of non-combustible building materials. Detailed requirements are defined in the relevant pipe systems guidelines.
Regulations are less stringent for buildings in building classes 1 and 2, as well as within residential units or within the same usage unit of up to 400 m² across a maximum of two storeys.
