Calculation of the Ap / V value (formerly U / A value) for steel girders and steel columns

Structural steel elements are often used in the modern construction of many buildings. In the event of a fire, there is a risk that the steel elements will no longer be able to withstand the resulting heat from a certain point and will give way. As a result, the load-bearing elements and ceilings collapse. Depending on the circumstances, three or four-sided cladding of the steel girder is necessary in order to increase the fire resistance.

According to DIN 4102, the Ap / V ratio or earlier U / A ratio determines the required cladding thickness for free-standing steel girders and columns. The calculation is based on the profile dimensions of the steel profile. Profile dimensions and steel cross-sections for the calculation can be found in the common tables for steel construction.

Ap corresponds to the circumference of the steel profile, V to the cross-sectional area. As a guideline, one can say that solid profiles have a lower Ap / V value than slim profiles with the same circumference. This is because slimmer steel profiles reach the point more quickly where they can no longer withstand the heat. You therefore need thicker cladding in order to achieve the required fire resistance period.
