Emergency routes are access points and pathways used by rescue services (fire brigade) and for rescue operations. They serve external rescue purposes and are subject to specific regulations, particularly in special buildings such as high-rise buildings, accommodation facilities and railway stations. In addition, they are required for firefighting operations.
Escape routes, on the other hand, are intended for self-rescue and usually consist of staircases, corridors and exits leading outside. They become particularly relevant in the event of fire or other hazards in order to protect human life.
A risk assessment determines which measures must be implemented to comply with all structural fire safety requirements. The first escape route is always the usual access to the rooms. The second escape route serves as an emergency exit or emergency access via ladders or turntable ladders, which can be reached through specially designed windows on upper floors.
Escape and emergency route plans provide clear information on the location of emergency exits, escape routes and fire extinguishers within a building. They also indicate the locations of first aid facilities, where available.
Escape routes and firefighting equipment are displayed using standardized pictograms to ensure international understanding. These plans are installed at suitable locations throughout the building so they are immediately visible in an emergency.
